Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the ability to question specific calls from the official, echoing the system currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
